Data Migration Using Robocopy

An example: RoboCopy /MIR will mirror source to target - that means added, changed, and deleted files are considered. An important difference in using AzCopy -sync is that deleted files on the source are not removed on the target. That makes for an incomplete differential-copy feature set. AzCopy will continue to evolve. At this time, AzCopy is not a recommended tool for migration scenarios with Azure file shares as the target.

Data Migration using robocopy

The goal is to move the data from existing file share locations to Azure. In Azure, you'll store your data in native Azure file shares you can use without a need for a Windows Server. This migration needs to be done in a way that guarantees the integrity of the production data and availability during the migration. The latter requires keeping downtime to a minimum, so that it can fit into or only slightly exceed regular maintenance windows.

The migration process consists of several phases. First, you'll need to deploy Azure storage accounts and file shares. Next, you'll configure networking, consider a DFS Namespace deployment (DFS-N), or update your existing one. Once it's time for the actual data copy, you'll need to consider repeated, differential RoboCopy runs to minimize downtime, and finally, cut-over your users to the newly created Azure file shares. The following sections describe the phases of the migration process in detail.

Pete,I am migrating two servers from Linux to MS Server 2016. I have tried using the rsync from Linux to MS Server 2016 but it fails. I tried using rsync from Server 2016 to Linux and it also fails. I used the robocopy tool which I have used in the past successfully but this time I am running into an issue where I have to use the credentials of root to access the shares on the samba linux server. Does robocopy support username/password like rsync.

Built on Microsoft Windows Server, Amazon FSx for Windows File Server enables you to migrate your existing datasets fully into your Amazon FSx file systems. You can migrate the data for each file. You can also migrate all the relevant file metadata including attributes, timestamps, access control lists (ACLs), owner information, and auditing information. With this total migration support, Amazon FSx enables moving your Windows-based workloads and applications relying on these file datasets to the Amazon Web Services Cloud.

If you are copying large files over a slow or unreliable connection, you can enable restartable mode by using the /zb option with the robocopy in place of the /b option. With restartable mode, if the transfer of a large file is interrupted, a subsequent Robocopy operation can pick up in the middle of the transfer instead of having to re-copy the entire file from the beginning. Enabling restartable mode can reduce the data transfer speed.

Robocopy is designed to replicate data between two locations that are locally accessible on the same host. To use Robocopy to migrate data to your FSx for OpenZFS file system, you need to mount the source file system and the destination OpenZFS volume on the same Windows-based EC2 client instance. The following procedure outlines the necessary steps to perform this migration using a new EC2 instance.

Until migration ends, the customer has two arrays on their premises, taking up floor space and needing power, cooling and system management, according to Jack. The data migration process in-flight often takes much longer than expected. It is generally a one-off exercise, conducted by businesses that are not data migration experts. Few lessons are learnt or carried over from previous migrations.

Also, data that is written to tape in a backup process is read back to verify that what was written is what should have been written. With data migration this happens only when specialist software is used. Only then do you have a data custody chain that can satisfy compliance regulations.

When file data is selected for migration, a hash of its contents is calculated before it is written to the target system. It is read back, a new hash calculated and the two hashes are compared to ensure an exact copy has been made. If there is a mismatch the file is copied again. DobiMigrate software does this automatically.

To date the company has worked for 737 customers, with 30 per cent apiece in finance and healthcare. Eighty per cent of its work is in the USA where it has 30 staff. Customer migrations include data moving between on-premises and cloud destinations.

Companies such as InfiniteIO (file access acceleration), Igneous (extremely large file system storage), Komprise (file system lifecycle management), Actifio and Cohesity (secondary data management), have expertise in scanning file system metadata but apply it for their own purposes, not data migration.

Good planning is the key to success in a NAS data migration project. Generally, most migrations take a similar approach that involves assessment, planning, resource acquisition and provisioning, pre-migration, migration, and verification.

Here we will look at some of the popular and frequently used data migration tools to migrate the data to Azure NetApp Files from on-premise NAS systems or File Servers or from AWS/Google Cloud file shares to Azure NetApp Files and also from Azure Files to Azure NetApp Files.

Cloud Sync is a SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) solution for data migration between any source and destination platform. After performing an initial baseline copy of the full data set, Cloud Sync will incrementally synchronize only the data that has changed, which makes it very efficient, especially when working with large datasets.

The Cloud Sync service works by performing data migration and synchronization operations through the use of a data broker instance. This instance can be created in the cloud, using an on-premises or Microsoft Azure virtual machine. In either case, the Cloud Sync UI simplifies the process by helping you create the data broker. For documentation refer the link.

With XCP you can fully utilize available CPU, network, and storage resources to scan, scope, copy and verify large file trees at maximum speed. With logging, reporting, subdirectory granularity plus three levels of verification (stats, structure and full data), XCP offers unique capabilities to accelerate and improve file tree processing and data migration.

Data migration would depend on various factors like available bandwidth, type of data i.e. the data with large files and data with millions of small files, amount of data, connectivity between source and destination, consideration of downtime during final cutover, the speed of data transfer, based on such and many other factors you can choose one of the above migration tools to migrate your NAS data to Azure NetApp Files. Azure NetApp Files has three different service levels you can choose from based on your requirement, consider using Premium/Ultra service level when migrating data to Azure NetApp Files to aid in faster migration.

The most common form of data migration is done by carrying all files and permissions. Microsoft has an inbuilt tool and PowerShell commands used as the migration tools. The migration utility eases the migration process by moving several roles, features, and even the operating system to a new server.

5. After the installation, enable the destination server to accept deployment data. This is done using the PowerShell console using the following command:Add-PsSnapin microsoft.windows.servermanager.migration

For many server users, the prospect of purchasing a new computer is unappealing since they will have to move their data from one PC to another. While it may appear to be a simple procedure, it may quickly consume a significant amount of efforts if you are not attentive. The good news is that you can simplify the issue for yourself by using smart technology solutions.

EaseUS PCTrans is the best data migrating technology for its convenience of use and efficacy. It is a one-click PC transfer program that allows transferring data without losing any data from one PC to another. You may effortlessly load photographs, audio, and movies one by one using this transfer tool. Moreover, it allows moving applications between two PCs.

You have now learned how to consolidate multiple file servers. While it demands a lot more work the base concept of performing a consolidation of multiple servers vs a 1:1 migration is the same. The success of the consolidation resides in the work that is put into the investigation beforehand and at the cut-over rather than in the file transfer itself. So the advice is to be careful and meticulous when sorting through and organizing the file shares beforehand. And also since you are using excel it is easy to share with colleagues!

In order to minimise downtime when migrating a large amount of email data, it is possible to copy the email data before having to stop services to users. Normally, when you copy email from one server to another, when moving an installation, the source server is not available to users. So email cannot be sent or read by users until the whole copy is complete. This copy can take a long time depending on the size of data and the number of files, so to minimise downtime there is a couple of options available. The simplest is to use robocopy to copy the data, but if this is not possible then using FreeFileSync with FTP provided by FileZilla is an alternative, thought there is another step involved.

The initial sync may take a while, but subsequent ones will be much faster. When you are ready to do the swap to the new server, you would stop all the mail services on the existing server so nothing is altering the files, then do the robocopy commands again for a final time and then point your users to the new server. If you are keeping the same IP addresses for the new server, i.e. you are going to move the IP address from the old server to the new one, then you can also include the queues, otherwise use the server migration article information on how to handle this: 350c69d7ab
